Databases Podcast

Belk Library’s newest podcast is available.  “How Databases can Help” features librarians Patrick Rudd and Jamane Yeager discussing some of Belk Library’s interesting and useful databases.  Databases with music, images, business information, and genealogical information are discussed.  These databases can be used for both scholarly and personal research. National French Week Nov. 4-11

france.jpgBe sure to check out the books and movies on display now. The purpose of National French Week is “to increase our community’s understanding and appreciation of the francophone world by finding interesting and entertaining ways of looking at how French touches our lives as well as learning about the dozens of countries and millions of people who speak this beautiful language.”

Library Fall Break hours

Elon University will be on fall break Oct. 16-20.  The library’s hours during this time are:

Friday, Oct. 16: 7:30 am to 5:00 pm
Saturday, Oct. 17: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Sunday, Oct. 18: Noon to 5:00 pm
Monday, Oct. 19: 9:00 am to 11:00 pm
Tuesday, Oct. 20: open at 7:30 am & resume regular hours

There will be no overnight hours for Elon students during fall break.  The library will close at 5:00pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  If you have any questions, please call the information desk at 278-6599.

Common reading at Belk

a_thousand_splendid_suns.gifThe author of this year’s Common Reading selection, Khaled Hosseini, will speak at Fall Convocation on Tuesday, October 13th at 4 p.m. in Alumni Gym.  A Thousand Splendid Suns traces many unstable events in Afghanistan (during the 1960s-2003) and specifically focuses on the tumultuous lives of two Afghan women and how they cross paths with one another. Be sure to check out the book display in Belk Library during the week of October 12th. The library has prepared a Research Guide to help you find additional sources about subject areas discussed in A Thousand Splendid Suns. Hosseini is also the author of The Kite Runner, a 2003 bestseller.

Multimedia workstations

Need to use Photoshop or edit a video? Use one of the 8 media workstations located just outside of Media Services on the 1st floor of the library. There are 5 Macs and 3 PCs that have software (Microsoft Office, Apple iLife and Adobe Creative Suite) and equipment to create films, websites and other projects. There’s also a large screen collaboration stations with the same software located by the elevator on the 1st floor. Ask the elite student at the library Information Desk for assistance if needed.

Sounds of Game Night podcast

Belk Library’s new podcast features “The Sounds of Game Night.” Game night was hosted by the library on Friday, September 18, and was sponsored by the ACM student club.    Students and staff gathered to play popular video games such as Halo 3 and Beatles Rock Band.  Librarians Shaunta Alvarez and Patrick Rudd talked to students about their favorites games.  To hear the podcast, go to: http://belklibrarypodcast.blogspot.com/

Where’s Journal Finder?

home page search boxWondering what happened to Journal Finder? It’s still here, but it’s now part of our new multi-function search box.

To look for specific journals, magazines and newspapers, click on the Journal Titles tab, type in the title you’re looking for and click Search. It’s as simple as that!

International visitor to Belk

Ms. Fumiko Soda, a librarian from Seinan Gakuin University in Fukuoka, Japan, toured Belk Library Monday, Sept. 14 — part of a nationwide study of exemplary learning commons.  Belk’s first floor is an early example of such a commons, in which technology, library, and support services such as media, writing, and tutoring are combined in one location.

Library hosts Game Night

Over 100 students, faculty, and staff turned out for Game Night at Belk Library on Friday, September 18.  Students feasted on brownies, cookies, and snacks when not playing Beatles Rock Band and Halo 3.  Other popular video games included Left 4 Dead, Nintendo, and Wii Sports.  Staff and students also played board and card games such as Twister, Connect4, LifeJenga, Uno, and worked on puzzles.

The Belk Library staff and ACM Club teamed up to make Game Night possible.  Another Game Night event is being planned for the spring.
