Welcome to The Call of South Africa Course Blog!
In 2007, Dr. Prudence Layne introduced Elon University's first winter-term study abroad program to South Africa as part of a larger effort to develop the African/African-American Studies minor at the University. Each year, thirty students are guided through an academic and cultural experience that spurs their personal growth. In 2008, the course doubled the number of applicants for its thirty slots, and has now joined its sister course "Ghana: West African History and Culture" as one of Elon's most popular and life-changing experiences.
The blog is designed to foster community. Learn more about the course design, the readings, the students who have and will embark on this journey and about South Africa by following the pages on the left of your screen. Of special interest is "The Call of South Africa Adopt-a-Student Program" and other service initiatives members of the class will undertake as part of their studies. Should you or anyone you know want to contribute to our efforts, please read the information we have provided for you.
Finally, instructors interested in learning more about assembling a successful study abroad program or improving a course you currently run should email playne@elon.edu
Thank you for visiting us and let us hear your thoughts by posting a comment. Check our blog frequently in January for photos and the students' reflection pieces about their experiences.
